Christopher Groves' research uses qualitative methods to investigate how people and institutions negotiate and deal with an intrinsically uncertain future – one increasingly imagined against the backdrop of global environmental change and accelerating technological innovation. 

The monograph Future Matters: Action, Knowledge, Ethics (Brill, 2007), co-authored with Professor Barbara Adam (Social Science, Cardiff University), examines these themes in depth, developed further alongside ethical themes in Care, Uncertainty and Intergenerational Ethics (Palgrave, 2014). 

Since 2013 his work has focused on the uncertainties that surround the transition to a decarbonised energy system, first on the Energy Biographies project and more recently on FLEXIS.
