The Welsh Government’s Wales and Africa team would like to invite you to a free event to celebrate International Women’s Day. Four Welsh organisations were awarded funding to deliver their unique projects in Uganda and Lesotho in order to highlight women’s empowerment and gender equality, working in collaboration with their African partners. Hub Cymru Africa, who work across civil society bringing together charities, individuals and organisations around core organisational themes, has worked closely with the project leaders to successfully deliver sustainable impacts, and will provide an insight into the importance of recognising the importance of gender equality around the globe.
There has been some truly exciting and progressive activity delivered through 4 different projects, particularly in the areas of livelihoods, gender based violence, promoting gender integration for climate justice, and supporting the safe transition of getting girls back into education.
Now the projects are reaching their conclusion, this event will provide a fantastic opportunity to hear about the inspirational work that has been delivered over the last couple of years.
The Minister for Social Justice, Jane Hutt MS, will open the event and highlight why women’s empowerment is so important to her, before we then hear presentations from:
Benson Omoding – Project Coordinator, Teams4U
PROJECT: Supporting vulnerable Ugandan girls back into education - supporting girls’ safe transition back into school via rebuilding strong peer and community support networks to tackle reproductive health (including menstrual period) taboos and associated harmful norms and practices made worse by the pandemic.
Janet Lowore - Programme Manager, Bees for Development
PROJECT: Widows do better: addressing the barriers faced by married women in benefitting from beekeeping in a man’s world in northern Uganda.
Barbara Davies-Quy, Deputy Director, Size of Wales
PROJECT: Lessons learnt. Addressing gender and climate justice in Uganda. Size of Wales in Partnership with Mount Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise (METGE), the International Tree Foundation (ITF) and Masaka District Landcare Chapter Leadership (MADLACC) set up a pilot project in March 2022 to promote women’s participation in climate justice and natural resource management in Uganda.
There will also be a video link from Uganda with Lorna Alum, GESI and Safeguarding Officer, METGE, and a member of the Bumaena women’s group.
Advocate Joanna Jonas - Director, Nairasha Legal Support
PROJECT: Strengthening Law Enforcement Capacity for GBV Response in Lesotho. Nairasha Legal Support have been working in partnership with Dolen Cymru to strengthen the capacity of policing actors to respond to GBV cases in Lesotho in order to increase the number of reported cases in the long term.
Registration will be from 9.30am, and lunch will be provided at 12.30pm giving everyone the chance to network, have a look around the displays and speak to members of the project teams.
